Don’t touch me.
I didn’t give you permission.
You know that’s assault? You don’t, do you? I imagine you wouldn’t be doing it if you did. I hope you wouldn’t. You think it’s funny? It’s not. You slapped by bum and when I turned round you and all your friends looked away pretending it wasn’t you. Then you did it again. And again, the perpetrator remained faceless.
My bum doesn’t belong to you. I mean, yes, I thought it looked good in those jeans too, but that doesn’t mean you should give it a slap to show your appreciation. If I liked your face I wouldn’t slap it to let you know.
You don’t know my name. You don’t know if I have a ring that belongs on my finger or if I have any kids. But you don’t care, do you? It’s fun to you regardless, you don’t care that it makes me feel uncomfortable.
Years ago, in a nightclub and older man decided to try and remove my leggings from under my skirt while I danced on the dancefloor. He was drunk and I’m sure he thought it was funny. I bet you think that he sounds like a sleazy old man. But what he did is no different to what you’ve done to me. You both touched me without my permission, you both made me feel uncomfortable. You are both guilty of what is, at best, sexual harassment and, at worst, sexual assault.
Women have come to expect this when they go on nights out and thankfully now something is being done about it. Many bars in and around Bristol have decided to take a zero-tolerance approach and their staff are now trained to deal with such incidents. For example, eight pubs in Bristol have signed up to the Good Night Out Campaign (click here for more info). I have seen signs in bars saying that if someone is making you feel uncomfortable then report it to a member of staff and it will be handled firmly and sensitively. Avon and Somerset police want to make it clear that this kind of behaviour will no longer be tolerated and many others are doing the same.
So, whoever you were last night, slapping my bum to be seen as one the ‘LADS LADS LADS’, if I’d been able to identify you I could have had you kicked out. I’m sure you would have just gone on elsewhere and probably tried your game on some other girl. How many clubs do you need to be kicked out of before the message kicks in?
