Before I actually start writing this post, I want to express my thanks to the lovely girl who used my comment form in the ‘About me’ section of this blog. You are the first to use it and your words genuinely meant the world to me. Writing on the internet opens you up to all kinds of criticism and while I haven’t actually been subjected to ‘internet trolls’, I am aware that it’s a risk I take every time I post on this little blog. So for someone to take time out their life to send me a kind message, behind the scenes, well, it made my day. So thank you, my new internet friend, I know you’ll read this as you promised you’d visit often ☺️
So, back to this post! I mentioned in my last post that I wanted to write a novel in 2016. So, I’ve been giving this some serious thought and I have two ideas. Neither of them are particularly new to me, I’ve been mulling them over for quite a while now, but if I’m going to actually write a novel then I need to pick one and concentrate on it for the next 12 months. I’m sure more experienced writers have the ability to simultaneously work on two ideas at the same time, but what with work and maintaining this blog and getting fit again (and well, just having a life) I don’t think I have the time nor the brain space to do that! So, just the one idea for 2016, but I thought I’d take to internet world and ask your opinion on which one I should write.
The first idea
I’ve always believed that the two strongest human emotions are love and hate (well, I say human, who knows what dogs feel!). Both are emotions that can lead people to do things that they wouldn’t normally do. So, this first idea is based around three women and their relationships, all three will be connected, but how they are connected won’t be immediately obvious from the outset (I know how I’m going to connect them, but I don’t want to tell you that cause it’ll ruin it when you come to read it. Which I know you will. You will. Well, my mum will). The three relationships will be an outwardly happy family unit, a young girl and her first love and finally a woman who is having an affair with a married man. That covers the love part, but how quickly can love turn to hate? My creative writing has always been a little dark and this story will be no different.
This is the novel I attempted to write as part of National Novel Writing Month in November, so a lot of the ground work has kind of already been done. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it currently reads like a stream of consciousness and subsequently isn’t very well written (I’m being polite here, about my own work. That’s weird). Don’t judge, it’s hard work to write 10,000 words in a month! I also feel like this is the easy option as there won’t be much research to do; I’ve been in love and they always say you should write about what you know!
The second idea
This idea is inspired by a story someone told me once of a guy who took his own life at the age of 19. Did you know that in the UK suicide is one of the biggest killers of men between the ages of 19 and 35? The reason for this is largely unknown, but you could speculate that it’s because men aren’t encouraged to talk about their feelings, you know, big boys don’t cry and all that. Well, I don’t know why, cause’ I haven’t personally been affected by suicide, but it struck a chord. The other strand of this story will involve the idea of reincarnation and what happens to the soul when a person dies. I once got told that your starsign can tell you how many lives your soul has had; so as an Aquarian I’m an old soul on, I think, my last life (I should really make this one count, right??)
So, the story will centre around three young people who come together unexpectedly through a common desire to take their own lives. My problem with this idea is that, not only would it involve a lot of research, but I would have to write from the point of view of a man. And I’m a girl, in case you hadn’t noticed. Maybe not the girliest of girls, but a girl nonetheless! How do I write from the point of view of a man, when I don’t know what it’s like to be a man…?
I originally wrote this story as a play about 8 years ago when I was part of the Traverse Theatre’s Young Writers Group (depressingly, I’m now too old to be in that group). So this is a fully formed idea, it’s one of the few stories I’ve followed through to completion, even if it is in the wrong medium now. I think it would work better as a novel now though.
So, help me
There you have it, my two ideas. I won’t tell you which one I’m swaying towards, but I’d really appreciate if you could help a girl out and tell me which one you would rather read… If you don’t like either of them, well, I guess you can tell me that too. I’ll try not to take it personally (as I weep into my pillow).
Once I’ve reached a decision, hopefully with your help, then I’ll start building my characters so that they are fully formed believable human beings and not just names on a page, I’ll plan the structure so that it reads easily and keeps my readers (that’ll be you guys J ) gripped and then come up with a writing schedule that will culminate in a finished first draft by the end of 2016.
Thanks in advance for your help and any advice any one has would be greatly appreciated!
